Dear Intern,

This is an open letter to future interns.
Dear Future Intern,
If you are reading this, what would you be doing that you have stumbled upon this letter? Did you see this directly in my blog or, did you see this posted somewhere else? If it’s the latter, then I must be blog famous, don’t you think? Knowing that I was not posting nor advertising this somewhere, maybe you were looking for things about internship, yes? Or not. Lol. Well, hello, future intern. It’s me, Irish, an intern that will soon end her reign as one. I wrote this letter for you to know what I have felt over the course of 16 weeks that I spent as an intern.
I hope that you have made up your mind in choosing your internship company, have you? There are many things to consider in choosing an internship company. First, of course, is the company where you will be able to practice your learnings from the program you are enrolled in. Second, and I guess, the most important, is that you must choose this company because you felt a connection with it, that you think you will not only be able to practice here, but to also grow as an individual with professionalism, integrity, and values. I hope that this company will not only help you render hours, but will help you mold as a person, as an individual who can finally say that, “I am ready to be in the other world. I am ready to be independent, to live my life in my own accord.”
What else would I want to tell you? Uh, well, if there are any advice that I would tell you, is you must be very patient. Patience is a virtue, and is the key to everything. Without patience, you will not be able to do the things that you are supposed to do. If you are like me, then that is going to be 670 hours of patience for you, hon. You’re lucky if you’d turn to be like me, who will be extending her hours for up until April, or who knows, until I graduate? But that doesn’t mean you were extending for a bad reason. I think that the reason why supervisors are making you extend your hours as an intern was because they see a potential in you, that you were great in doing your job. They liked you, that’s what.
In this internship that you will soon be in, you will learn a lot of things, apart from being patient, there are tons of things to learn. You will learn to become independent, you will learn that in the adult world, you can’t simply pass on a question or task like you were answering an exam. You will learn not to ask for an answer to your workmates, because just like you, they are striving to answer their own exams. That’s not a bad thing, and it’s not like they will not offer help. However, if you continue to ask for help, for assistance, then what will that make you? A boss? No. All bosses started at a lower position than they have right now, maybe just like your position. So learn to do things on your own. You will learn that being shy is no excuse. You will talk to everyone and that is mandatory for your job. Again, it’s not a bad thing, it is learning to get out of your comfort zone and meeting all types of people. You may not like all of them, but that’s life, sweetheart. You are not meant to live to like everyone, but at the same time, you are not meant to live to dislike everyone. If you don’t like them, let them be, don’t mind them, don’t do something rash that would hurt them, because it hurts you too. If they don’t like you, don’t mind them, you are not living to make an impression, nor to look pity, you are where you are to learn, and learning that not all people are the same means you should learn to accept that circumstances like that happen, and there’s no need to fret. As long as you are doing nothing wrong, you’re good.
You will learn to accept mistakes, and these mistakes will make you learn to improve from it, and not to mope from it. You will learn to celebrate victories, and these victories will make you learn to work even harder, for the better. You will learn to prioritize, and these priorities will make you become a better and organized person than you have ever been.
Being an intern might have sound so petty to me, I admit. But ever since I got into this position, now, I must say that being an intern has been one of the best thing that has ever happened to me. It has given me opportunities, maybe a little of anxiety and pressure. But all is good, and I have survived! I am still alive.
Of all the learnings, I believe that the best thing you will learn is that you will learn to cherish memories. Not everyone if privileged to become an intern, or experience whatever you have experienced. I tell you, whether it is a good or bad memory, it’s okay. Because in every memory, is a lesson to learn.
Lastly, just have fun. Don’t overwork yourself! Enjoy this internship while it last. But don’t focus on just the internship. Patience, my dear. You will get through this.
Sincerely,

Irish.
